Joyce Hilda Banda- Malawi

Joyce Hilda Banda, born on April 12, 1950, in Malemia, British Nyasaland (now Malawi), is a Malawian politician and women’s rights advocate. She made history as the first female President of Malawi and the second female head of state in Africa.

Joyce Banda’s early life was marked by personal and political challenges. She faced gender-based discrimination and domestic violence, yet she managed to pursue education and became a teacher. Her interest in women’s rights and social issues led her to become involved in grassroots activism.

In the 1980s, Banda founded the National Association of Business Women (NABW) in Malawi, aiming to empower women economically and socially. Her advocacy for gender equality gained recognition, and she continued to work on behalf of women’s rights throughout her career.

Joyce Banda entered politics and served in various ministerial roles, including as Minister of Gender and Child Welfare, Foreign Affairs, and Education. In 2009, she was appointed as Malawi’s Vice President, making her the first woman in the country to hold that position.

In April 2012, Joyce Banda made history when she became the President of Malawi, following the sudden death of President Bingu wa Mutharika. Her presidency marked a commitment to economic reforms, poverty alleviation, and the empowerment of women and marginalized communities.

During her term, Banda implemented a series of economic and governance reforms, including devaluing the currency to stabilize the economy and initiating social programs to support vulnerable populations. However, her presidency also faced challenges, including criticism of economic policies and allegations of corruption within her administration.

In the 2014 presidential election, Joyce Banda lost to her successor, Peter Mutharika. She left Malawi for a period but returned in 2018. Since then, she has remained active in politics and continues her advocacy work for women’s rights and social justice.
