Winnie Madikizela-Mandela – South Africa

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (1936–2018) was a prominent South African anti-apartheid activist and political figure, recognised for her tireless efforts in the struggle for freedom and equality. Born on 26 September 1936, in Bizana, Pondoland (now part of the Eastern Cape Province), South Africa, she grew up in a rural setting, witnessing firsthand the injustices of apartheid.

Winnie’s activism began early as she joined the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League in the 1950s. She met and married Nelson Mandela in 1958, becoming Winnie Mandela. Mandela was arrested and imprisoned in 1962, leaving Winnie to continue the fight against apartheid in his absence. She faced persecution from the authorities, enduring arrests, harassment, and a ban on public speaking.

During Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment, Winnie emerged as a symbol of resistance, inspiring many with her unwavering commitment to the anti-apartheid cause. However, her involvement with the Mandela United Football Club, a group associated with violence in the late 1980s, led to controversy and allegations.

The end of apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s release in 1990 marked a new chapter for the country. Despite the couple’s separation in 1992 and subsequent divorce in 1996, Winnie remained active in politics. She served as a Member of Parliament and held various positions within the ANC.
